  • The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is the only route that begins from the north, making it quieter and less crowded than southern routes. Rongai is well known for its gentle gradient, scenic wilderness, and high success rate—making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a more relaxed ascent.

    The route joins the Marangu Route on the descent, offering varied landscapes including moorlands, alpine desert, and glacial views near the summit.

After registration at Rongai Gate, the trek begins through farmland and pine forest. The trail gradually climbs to Simba Camp, where you may spot colobus monkeys or antelope.

The forest gives way to moorland vegetation. The climb remains gentle with expansive views of the Kenyan plains.

A shorter but steeper day. Vegetation thins as you approach the alpine zone. Kikelewa Camp sits in a sheltered valley.

A steady climb to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. Afternoon is for rest and acclimatization.

Cross the lunar-like Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Early dinner and rest in preparation for summit night.

  • Hiking Time: 12–15 hours

Depart around midnight for the summit attempt. Reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, at sunrise. Descend to Horombo Camp for overnight rest.

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Descend through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
